The liars: Lady Jessica Nepean is fond of flirtation and loves to keep men dangling at the edge of proposal. At a little party at her sister Lady Rosamund's house, she is wooed by Edward Falkner, a recently returned South African hero. He is desperately in love with Jessica and even the best attempts of reasoning with him by his friend and colleague Sir Christopher Deering are to no avail. The notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith: the theme of the play is social radicalism. The title character is a vehement critic of all social conventions, especially marriage, and an advocate of free love.
