'The Common Pursuit' chronicles the erosion of the ambitions of a smug, elitist group of Cambridge friends. Gray regarded finishing the writing of the play, first performed at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in July 1984, as the only moment of pure happiness he ever experienced in the playwriting business.
