Great Blasket Island is a townland in the parish of Dunquin, county Kerry. The Blasket Islands lie off Slea Head, county Kerry, and are in the parish of Dunquin. Great Blasket Island, the largest, was inhabited by a small Gaelic-speaking community. In 1953 the enties population was moved to the mainland. This isolated group had produced seven acclaimed authors and over twenty volumes of Gaelic literature.
