Despite years of expensive government initiatives, England's children are doing less well than their counterparts in many other countries. Successive governments have called for simple answers to this complex problem, focusing on phonics as the highroad to literacy for all. Yet there is now abundant evidence on both sides of the Atlantic that what actually works in the classroom is a more comprehensive, integrated and flexible approach. This booklet draws such evidence together in a readable form.
