Paul Levy
Biography of Paul Levy (1876-1943), a German engineer educated in Danzig. In 1904, Levy moved to the Middle East to work on the Hejaz Railway, where he helped bring the line from Damascus to Medina into operation. In May 1906, Levy married his cousin Ida, and the couple lived in Damascus and Beirut. During World War I, he was awarded the Iron Cross. Back in Germany, Levy became the Inspector for Equipment Management for the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Altona, and in 1930, he was promoted to Director of the Reichsbahn. In 1935, the railway sent its Jewish officials into early retirement. Levy moved to Zehlendorf in Berlin. Emigration was no longer possible for him. With around a thousand other people, he was deported on February 26, 1943, from Moabit (Berlin) to Auschwitz.
