Presents portraits of ten Portuguese Conversos in Latin America from the late 16th to the mid-18th centuries, based on records of Inquisitorial trials. Juan Vicente, born ca. 1559 in Campomayor, was burned at the stake in Cartagena de Indias in 1626. Francisco Maldonado de Silva, born in 1592 in Tucumán, was burned at the stake in Lima in 1639, as was Manuel Bautista Perez, born in Portugal in 1590. Leonor Nuñez, born to a Portuguese family in Madrid in 1590, was condemned to the stake in Mexico in 1649. Francisco Botello, born ca. 1642 in Andalusia, was burned at the stake in Mexico in 1659; his Mexican-born wife, Maria de Zarate, died while imprisoned by the Inquisition in Mexico in 1665. Fernando de Medina, born in France in 1656, was burned at the stake in Mexico in 1699. Teresa Paes de Jesus, born in 1664 in Rio de Janeiro, was transferred to Lisbon in 1718 and burned at the stake there in 1720. João Thomas de Castro and his cousin António José da Silva, both born in Rio de Janeiro, were burned at the stake there in 1729 and 1739. The introduction, pp. 13-33, traces the history of the Conversos in Spain, Portugal, and "New Spain", emphasizing their role in the development of modernity.
