This collection of the correspondence between Maximilian Brantl and Thomas Mann presents an extensive selection of letters that have largely been unpublished until now. Their correspondence covered an unusually long period of time, from 1909 to 1951, and dealt with a broad spectrum of themes. It includes many different types of documents, from printed acknowledgements to detailed descriptions, from brief notes on legal advice to detailed philosophical discussions. This book presents Brantl's and Mann's correspondence, along with commentary, as well as several letters from third parties. It also contains an article on the tradition of the correspondence, the discussion of Thomas Mann's autograph in the 50s, and a detailed biographical essay on Brantl, drawing on extensive materials from his estate that are here analyzed for the first time.
