The articles in this handbook present an overview of the rights given to foreign groups in the Mediterranean-European world. They describe the legal and political regulations relating to the inclusion and exclusion of foreigners from the ancient world to the present. Geographically, the focus is on the Mediterranean region, as well as western and middle Europe; the time period covered ranges from ancient Egypt to the present. This handbook is the collaborative effort of a team of authors that includes historians of different eras and experts on the studies of religion, politics, and society.
