The modern university with its emphasis on research and science has made the world a demonstrably better place in the two hundred years since its inception. But the values of the academy are increasingly at odds with a contemporary society demanding above all the delivery of short-term profits. How can the values of the academy survive or even thrive in this sort of changing environment?
