History and folklore of an incident which "happened in the town centre on the 4th of August 1577, when a violent storm of thunder and lightning killed and injured several of the congregation assembled in St. Mary's Church for morning worship. The devil in the form of a Black Dog was believed to be responsible ...." A black dog is now the symbol of the town.
