Between the veterans influx of the 1940s and the riots of the 1960s, universities in America responded to a series of crises by making fundamental changes in their teaching methods and curricula. The pressures of the 1970s have led many universities to work toward a curriculum that is not only responsive but also reasoned and coherent. Based on four years of seminar discussions at Columbia University, this volume shows how a well-established tradition in higher education can be reorganized, enlarged, and exploited to meet the needs of our time.
