This is a classic work on how slaves adapted to urban life and found some bit of solace from the pecular institution by working in cities. Richard Wade explains how slaves worked as carpenters, metal workers, painters, and numerous other jobs to earn income for their masters and themselves. The city changed the character of slavery by giving slaves some choices and flexibility in mixing with the urban environment.
