"This volume explores aspects of the contemporary cultural and political life of Wales from perspectives coloured to a greater or lesser extent by that body of current criticism and theory labelled 'postcolonialism'. Structured in three parts, the first political and socio-historical, the second more concerned with contemporary Wales and the impact of devolution and the third dealing with Welsh culture, it exemplifies very diverse responses to the issue of postcoloniality and its relation to Wales. The volume's fourteen contributors consider such questions as: to what extent can Wales be said to be postcolonial in the sense of having accepted that it consists of plural cultures and identities? To what degree is it pertinent to think of Welsh policymakers as previously affected by 'mental colonization'? In what ways, if any, has the establishment of a Welsh Assembly affected language and gender issues in post-devolution Wales? And are there identifiable postcolonial currents in Welsh literature, stage, film and television drama, the visual arts and popular music? The collection does not aim to produce a blueprint for the application of postcolonial theory to Wales, but rather to stimulate ideas and suggest further avenues for investigation."--BOOK JACKET.
