Set between the end of the Ancien Régime and the Bourbon Restoration, tells the story of Olivier, count de R.. and his *mariage blanc* (a marriage that is not consummated for one reason or another). The character's secret and the consequent obstacle have always been interpreted in the direction of physical impotence, and, secondarily, of homosexuality.
