This book describes the research presented at the 9th Goldberg Workshop on Molecular and Subcellular Cardiology: Effects of Structure and Function. It includes transcripts of the discussions that followed each presentation. The Henry Goldberg Workshops, an international forum of scientists and cardiologists that began in Haifa in 1984, attempt to bridge the gap between clinical cardiac medicine and molecular biology. This important and worthy objective is well met, judging by the text of this book. The book is directed toward those interested in understanding cardiac performance at the level of subcellular and molecular dynamics and, as such, is of interest to both basic scientists and clinical cardiologists. As may be expected for a book of this type, the presentation of each chapter reflects in large part the style of the presenting authors. Many chapters contain extensive illustrations that help clarify the details of the research, and other chapters have few or no illustrations. The references are generally pertinent and up-to-date. The transcribed discussions that followed each presentation are frequently both interesting and enlightening. This book presents a current view of our understanding of molecular cardiology and provides an excellent breadth of coverage of topics related to structure and function of the heart on a micromolecular scale. It is a useful book for those who require a current overview ofmolecular cardiology while providing sufficient detail for researchers delving into specific topics in cardiovascular medicine.
