Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who emigrated to the US in 1938, was one of the foremost architects of the 20th century. His work includes the German pavillion for the International Exhibition at Barcelona, for which he designed his famous Barcelona chair and the steel and glass Seagram Building in New York, built with Philip Johnson.
