Deputy US Marshal Piedmont Kelly must return to Cochise, Arizona Territory, when his old friend Sheriff John Henry Stevens is kidnapped, leaving the town at the mercy of a roving band of outlaws and escaped prisoners. To make matters worse, Cochise's craven mayor has just sworn in the sheriff's replacement - a fast talking braggart whose heroic boasts round Kelly's suspicions. The marshal smells a rat, and so does his newly appointed deputy, Spotted Dog, a Chiricahua Apache, whose uncanny tracking powers have saved Kelly's life on more than one occasion. Together they'll try to sniff out a criminal conspiracy that could only bloom in this lawless desert land.
