Abstract: An allergist must be knowledgeable in immunology, physiology, and pharmacology. The text is divided into two sections: basic science and clinical science. The basic science section deals with: 1) immunology; the identification of antigens, establishment of causal relationships between antigen and lesion, and identification of the immunological response; 2) physiology; the structure and neurophysiologic control of the functions of organs involved in allergy; and 3) pharmacology; drug therapy for allergy and drug reactions. The section on clinical sciences describes a variety of clinical states that concern allergists. Topics include: 1) asthma; 2) dermatitis; 3) insect and ocular allergy; 4) environmental factors influencing allergy; and 5) adverse reactions to drugs, food, or immunizing agents.
